Arizona United Soccer Club who ply in the USL announced late last week that music producer and global DJ, Diplo, has made a financial incvestment in the club. According to their site:

“The Diplo-led investment group – which includes TMWRK Management as well as other artists and music executives – are together purchasing a minority equity stake in the team and will hold a seat on Arizona United SC’s board of directors.”

“I’ve been really fortunate to travel all over the world and experience different cultures through music. Wherever I am, Jamaica, Spain, England, China, etc., soccer is a social constant,” said Diplo. “I wanted to figure out a way to get involved with the game and team sports so when Arizona United presented itself, I immediately jumped at the opportunity. I see soccer the same way I see music, as a connective tissue linking the world’s cultures.”

Every professional soccer club in America wants to connect with the youth generation. And there may be no better move by any soccer club in America than the move that Arizona United made by bringing Diplo in. Let’s just run some social numbers to see the reach that he has:

* 1.62 million twitter followers; 2 million Instagram followers and 2.4 million Facebook followers

Those are massive numbers. And Diplo’s impact on the culture at large is massive as well. It’s going to be very interesting to see what goes on down in Arizona. Add the Diplo move to the recent move that brought Frank Yallop in as the head coach and president of soccer operations and something special is taking place down in Phoenix. I’m very excited to see what the next couple of seasons look like for Arizona United.
