Hope Solo Gets Suspended for Six Months

U.S. Soccer has suspended goalkeeper Hope Solo from the U.S. Women’s National Team for six months for conduct that is counter to the organization’s principles.
Gotta say that we all saw this coming, but we didn’t necessarily see this coming.
Six months is a pretty long suspension for a postgame quote. After getting bounced from the Olympics to an inferior team.
But obviously, it’s not just for the remarks after the Sweden game. Here is the quote from the presser that means the most:
“Taking into consideration the past incidents involving Hope, as well as the private conversations we’ve had requiring her to conduct herself in a manner befitting a U.S. National Team member, U.S. Soccer determined this is the appropriate disciplinary action.”
Basically, it looks like Hope’s time with US Soccer are done. Looking at past incidents, and “private conversations” tells me that there was probably the, “one-more-issue-and-its-a-gots-to-go-situation” talks.
The reality is, Hope Solo is who Hope Solo is. Not to bring up old shxt but we all remember the comments and situation with Briana Scurry back in 2007. Hope Solo has been a lightning rod from the jump.
This is what Hope said in her latest IG post:
* Side note *
I like Hope Solo. I really like her actually.
I like her fire and I like her intensity, but I just don’t think she reacts to adversity well.
That’s not a knock, its just a reality. Not everyone out here can deal with some struggle or some things not going their way.
After this latest dustup though, it’s looking like this is the end of Hope Solo in the public eye.
Yeah she’s hot and yeah she’s Hope Solo but the reality is that a lot of the celebrity of Hope was built upon her being the US WNT keeper, being the keeper for the best squad in the world, and that teams dominance of the space.
But she’s a mature athlete. The next time that US Women are in a “meaningful” competition is a couple of years away. Nothing is official, but I don’t think after this 6-months is over, she’ll be back. I don’t think she will even really want to be back. I’m sure she’s got what I would imagine is a good stash of cash (not that I’m patting her pockets or anything) and at some point, for all athletes, it ends. Lest we forget that she was on Dancing With The Stars. She’s done a ton of interviews and long form features as one of the faces of women’s soccer, so I think the media opportunities in the future will probably be very open for her.
I think we are going to miss Hope Solo but I can’t fault the federation for making this the proverbial straw that broke the camels back.
What I am excited about, is this. And, I’ve been waiting for it for a while tbh.
The Ashlyn Harris era!!!! Can’t wait.
