adidas, Major League Soccer and Parley For The Oceans unite to raise awareness around the harmful impact of marine plastic pollution with the unveiling of four adidas MLS Parley club jerseys. The kits—each made from technical yarns containing Parley Ocean Plastic™—will be seen on-pitch on Sunday, April 23rd when New York City FC host Orlando City SC at Yankee Stadium, and when LA Galaxy welcome reigning MLS Cup champions Seattle Sounders FC at StubHub Center.
We caught up with Brendan Hannan, VP Marketing, Comms and digital at the LA Galaxy to learn more about the jersey, the ideas behind it and some more of the environmental initiatives that the LA Galaxy are committed to.
Hi Brendan, can you tell us about the adidas x Parley x LA Galaxy jersey and how that came together?
This was an environmental initiative driven by adidas and Parley. adidas and Parley are committed to environmental sustainability and they wanted to do something that was unique. They have partnered with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich previously. Last fall the opportunity came up for the LA Galaxy to be one of four MLS teams that would get to wear an adidas x Parley jersey in one of our games. For the LA Galaxy to be able to celebrate Earth Day and wear a limited edition adidas x Parley jersey was something we were excited about.
You mentioned that this first surfaced as a possibility last fall, is that usually a normal time line for something like this to come together?
Timelines always vary. We have great collaborative relationships with MLS and adidas and in this case Parley, so this was an opportunity to come up with a project that we would see have real impact and change. For us to be able to talk about the important issue of our oceans and the recovery of recycled plastic from the oceans was something that we wanted to be a part of. Especially considering that we live, work and play in Los Angeles and the ocean is such a big part of LA and the Los Angeles culture.
With that in mind, it has to be extra special to work on a project like this with the ocean being so close to so many involved with the LA Galaxy.
Obviously all of the teams that are wearing an adidas x Parley jersey have a connection to the ocean, but I think Los Angeles has an extra special connection to the ocean. The Pacific Ocean is a big part of our daily lives and is the backyard for so many of us. We’ve done a couple of unique jersey things with the ocean as a background in the past, so for us to be able to take that a step forward and talk about environmental sustainability with the jersey, it aligns with what we are always trying to do here in LA and at StubHub Center.
Will this jersey be worn only once or are there greater opportunities with it?
For now it’s a one-time thing. We’re doing a couple of additional things around “Protect the Pitch” which is our environmental and sustainability program. We have produced relan tote bags that are made of the recycled 2014 Championship banners and they will be sold to benefit the LA Galaxy Foundation. But I think for Sunday, this is the first time you will see the adidas x Parley jerseys and we will see if there is another opportunity for something like this in the future.
Will these jerseys be available for fans to purchase?
You can purchase them through the LA Galaxy Foundation. You will be able to purchase the game worn jerseys straight off the players backs via lagalaxy.com.
All the money from the jersey sales will go straight to the foundation and is a bigger part of a beach cleanup effort that is a part of our LA Galaxy Foundation Fridays and that will take place on Friday, June 9th. It’s all tied in together for us and it’s a cool way for us to support environmental projects in our community.
Additionally, Stub Hub Center is one of the most environmentally sustainable stadiums in MLS and North America. We have a greenhouse here, we have a beehive here, we have a chicken coop, we have a planting garden. We utilize a lot of those items here in house. And you should see more of that coming. We do bi-weekly school visits to the garden so people can see the environmental component to this. We use reclaimed water to water our fields, we have LED lights at StubHub Center to reduce our footprint. We have waste and recycling programs along with water and energy programs. Our Protect the Pitch program and our sustainability programs are best in class in MLS.
One of the things that we love about the adidas x Parley jerseys is that it’s a great on-field initiative that ties together the overall Protect the Pitch programs which serves to make a difference and impact our community.
That all sounds really great. Thanks for taking the time to chat with us about this and best of luck this weekend!
