MUNICH (Reuters) — Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness wants Sepp Blatter to be deposed if the FIFA president fails to clean up soccer’s governing body in the next year.

“Blatter must clearly explain in the next 12 months how he wants to dry out this swamp, and if he doesn’t do that, one must create possibilities to depose him,” Hoeness said in an interview with Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

“Every week something new comes up,” added the former West Germany player as Bayern, who have quietened their criticism of FIFA in the last few months, went on the attack again.

He added: “We have been quiet for a while because we had the feeling that it was sorting itself out. But now we will once again put the matter on the boil.”

FIFA, and Blatter himself, have been under intense scrutiny and widely criticised for the handling of a number of issues over the last 13 months including the award of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, bribery and corruption scandals and Blatter’s ill-judged remarks about racism in November for which he subsequently apologised.

The 75-year-old Swiss was re-elected for a fourth term as FIFA president last June, for what he says will be his last term of office ending in 2015.

Arjen Robben Undergoes Groin Surgery

Arjen Robben will be sidelined for the next ten days after undergoing groin surgery in Munich, Bayern announced on Friday. The 27-year-old Netherlands international withdrew from the Dutch squad for the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Moldova and Sweden and returned to Munich on Thursday, reporting immediately to club Chief Medical Officer Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt for an examination and treatment.

“Due to a pubic bone inflammation, the player has developed a weak groin [a so-called sportsman's groin, an early-stage hernia] over the last few days. Surgery was successfully performed on the groin injury this morning by Prof. Dr. Dr. Tomas Hoffmann at Maria-Theresia hospital in Munich,“ Dr. Müller-Wohlfahrt commented on Friday. The medical unit expects Robben to resume training in around ten days.

Bayern Munich – ‘Van Marijk Clearly Misunderstood Something’

Arjen Robben was obliged to undergo groin surgery last week, as reported in a news release issued by Bayern Munich. Netherlands national coach Bert van Marwijk responded to this release with accusations against the Bavarian club: “They want to blame Arjen’s pre-hernia ‘sportsman’s groin’ on us rather than being grateful that we subjected him to a thorough examination.”

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge feels this is the result of a serious misapprehension. “Bert van Marwijk has clearly misunderstood something. Bayern are making no accusations, neither against him nor the Netherlands national team. Quite the opposite: in this situation, we think it is very accommodating of the Dutch FA to send Arjen back to Munich, therefore giving him the opportunity to recover from the injury as quickly as possible. We hope that Arjen Robben can train and play again as soon as possible.”
