Pedro Pompilio

One of the most successful Presidents in the history of Argentine and Boca Juniors football, Pedro Pompilio has passed away late last week of a heart attack at the age of 55.

Pompilio, who had been with the club’s administration / business from the early 1980’s and served as Vice - President from 1995 - 2007 before taking over as President in December of last year, was instrumental in Juan Roman Requelme’s return and the hiring of head coach Carlos Ischia.

Palermo Suffers Ligament Damage

Filed under: Boca Juniors, Injuries, Martin Palermo

Martin Palermo

Boca Juniors 2 - 1 Apertura win came at a high price at the weekend as 32 year old Martin Palermo again damaged cruciate ligaments (ACL) in his right knee after an awkward fall just before halftime, the same knee and injury he had back in 1999.

With the surgery expected to take place Tuesday, Boca doctor Jose Veiga told Radio la Red, ‘We found out exactly what we didn’t want to discover.

‘Martin firstly injured the inner ligament and then the effort tore the cruciate ones. He will need five to eight months to recover.’

Palermo has scored the most goals in the history of Boca, surpassing the mark of Francisco Varallo at 193 and record held since 1939.

Riquelme To Atletico Madrid?

Filed under: Atletico Madrid, Boca Juniors, Juan Roman Riquelme, Rumors

With all the talk surrounding fellow Argentine and current Atletico Madrid forward Sergio “Kun” Aguero heading to Manchester United, Atletico head coach Javier Aguirre has revealed his interest in one of the best / most underrated players on the face of this planet, Juan Roman Riquelme.

After getting royally shafted during his last stop in Spain with Villareal and Chilean head coach Manuel Pellrgrini, Riquelme has been killing it with his Boca Juniors, winning the 2007 Copa Libertadores (and the MVP of the tournament) on loan before making the move final in January of this year.

Since the transfer window has opened, Atletico has been making some impressive moves ahead of their 2008/09 Champions League campaign.  So why not try and sign a true playmaker that already has the International pedigree, can create passes, space and opportunities that very few have the ability to do?

The Cup Kicketh Off Tonight

Filed under: Argentina, Boca Juniors, Copa Libertadores, South America

Copa Libertadores

The African Cup of Nations just ended, but the next major tournament is about to get under way.  The best clubs that South America has to offer are getting set to kick off the 2008 Copa Libertadores, and this should be a scorcher.  I dig watching this tournament.  talk about passion, South American fans have that in bundles, and the skill on display is sick.  last years winner Boca Juniors looks strong once again, with the maestro Riquelme running things for them.  Keep an eye on Cruzeiro, they have been on fire lately, and should definitely be challenging this year.   River Plate is looking strong, and as always, I’m sure there is some less known team that is going to jump up and bite someone in the arse and knock them out.  Sit back, pour yourself a Quilmes and enjoy the tourney.
