He makes his way toward the mosque for morning prayer, the dirt streets pocked with rock and rubble. Around town, other boys slip into the predawn darkness. The ones who own soccer cleats wear them; parents save for months to afford the $12 shoes. Many come barefoot. Hollywood United Vs Champions United

The Saturday before the MLS Cup Final, Hollywood United will be taking on Champions United (a team consisting of musicians put together by MLS Magazine) to raise money for the victim’s that were affected by Hurricane Ike.

With the game kicking off at 3pm on Saturday, November 22nd at the Home Depot Center Field 5 and Fox Soccer Channel broadcasting the match, a great afternoon of football and festivities (EA Sports will be setting up game consoles featuring FIFA 2009) should be had by all.

 Chicago, IL (October 10, 2008) - The Chicago Red Stars cordially invite you to join us at Underground on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, for an exclusive event. VIP Access will give you the opportunity to meet 2008 US Women’s National Soccer Team Olympic Gold Medalist Kate Markgraf, along with Red Stars Head Coach Emma Hayes, President Peter Wilt, GM Marcia McDermott and additional Red Stars staff.

Underground is a 21 and older venue. It is located in downtown Chicago at 56 West Illinois Street, Chicago, IL 60610. VIP Access is from 5:30pm-8:30pm, and Kate Markgraf is scheduled from 5:30pm - 7:00pm.

Tickets are $65 and the majority of every ticket sold will benefit the Chicago Red Stars Charitable Foundation. Each ticket includes hors d’oeuvres, served from 5:45pm to 6:45pm, and 3 drink tickets.

Ethan Zohn is Getting His Dribble On

Ethan Zohn has just kicked off his trek to raise money and awareness for HIV/AIDS in Africa. Our girl Anne just sent us the following information about this trip.

Ethan Zohn, kicked off a 3-month, 550 mile journey of alifetime yesterday evening. In the name of Grassroots Soccer UNITED, Ethan will be traveling from Boston to Washington DC on foot and dribbling a soccer ball the entire distance. The first-ever Grassroots Soccer UNITED dribble looks to get kids and all soccer fans around the world involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa. Grassroots Soccer / The Power of Soccer

The line is available for purchase at Grassroots Soccer United. The created merchandise – jerseys, soccer balls, drawstring gear bags – are branded with the Grassroot Soccer UNITED insignia and is affordably priced, at up to $25 – the exact cost of putting one at-risk youth through the Grassroot Soccer HIV / AIDS education curriculum.”

Goal4Africa - Global Awareness

UPDATE -  They ended up moving the date to July 12th at Allianz Arena in Germany, but everything is a go for Goal4Africa and Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday Celebration on July 18th.

Clarence Seedorf, Rino Gattuso, Gigi Buffon, Emmanuel Adebayor, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, and Fabio Cannavaro are just a few of the 40 players coming together in the highly symbolic match.

Goal4Africa

The Humanitarian Initiative Goal4Africa was conceived from a simple idea, education and football.

On July 18th at the Allianz Arena in Munich, world stars Clarence Seedorf (the 1st Global Ambassador for Goal4Africa), Steven Gerrard, Rino Gattuso and Kaka will play a two team World All-Star match in celebration of Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The campaign will continue to run up to the 2010 World Cup with the goal being to raise $90 million, with fans being able to pledge money for every goal scored by their favorite team over the next two years.
