On Showtime, “Cocaine Cowboys”

Filed under: Colombia, Money, Movies, WTF

On Showtime this month is a documentary called “Cocaine Cowboys”, about the city of Miami in the early to mid 80’s and the rise and fall of the drug culture along with the villains and heroes who inspired movies and shows like “Scarface” and “Miami Vice”.  Scary but truly fascinating; this is the real story.  Highly recommend.

Real Madrid 2 - Independiente Sante Fe 1

Filed under: Colombia, Friendlies, Rafael van der Vaart, Real Madrid, Real Salt Lake

Well that didn’t take long for Rafael van der Vaart to make his mark in the number 18 jersey on his debut. A free kick goal and an assist off a free kick on Pepe’s goal to lead Real Madrid over Colombian side Independiente Santa Fe.

Every Real Salt Lake fan has their heads in their hands knowing this was the game that was to be played in Salt Lake at the weekend.

But don’t fret, my money’s on the 2009 All-Star game.

Sociology 101, Cali style

While there will always be a fine line between passion and people going ape sh*t and taking advantage of the situation, I think we can all agree on where this falls.

This riot between supporters broke out during the America de Cali vs Deportivo de Cali game after a penalty wasn’t called. 18 peeps ended up being stabbed and over 80 were injured during the disgusting assault on the game.

Higuita back in the game

rene-higuita.jpg

Jose Rene Higuita Zapata was the ultimate showman in the game for a Colombia side that saw unprecedented success during the 1990’s with names like Carlos Valderrama, Leonel Alvarez, Faustino Asprilla and Freddy Rincon.

Now 41 year old El Loco is back in the game, this time with second division Colombian side Deportivo Rionegro who are currently sitting in second place.  Although he’s not in the best physical shape, Higuita led Rionegro to a 0-0 against Bajo Cauca last Sunday and looks to figure in the starting 11 for the rest of the campaign.

Not bad for a man who’s career saw him feature in 68 games for Colombia, scoring 3 goals, pulling off his famous Scorpion against England in Wembley, 7 months in jail for receiving $65k  for his part in the highly publicized kidnapping release of a friends daughter and television host of Colombia’s equivalent to Survivor.

Sergio Galvan Rey hits his 200th in Colombia

sergio-galvan-rey.jpg

He might not have lit up the scoring charts in Major League Soccer(ten goals in two season with the then NY MetroStars) the way he has in Colombia, but Argentinian Sergio Galvan Rey has just hit goal number 200 in Futbol Profesional Colombia. The 5′ 7 1/2″ striker found the back of the net against Bucamaranga this past weekend and now Galvan Rey has his sights on becoming the most prolific striker in Colombia’s history with just 17 more needed. The 33 year old has dropped 41 goals for Atletico Nacional in just two years.

Galvan Rey earns even more respect in my book for his comments on MLS and what he took from his time in America’s top flight.
