The Red Bulls Arena - Built by Mikita site is online, complete with a webcam on the construction site in Harrison, NJ.

Over the next month, they’ll start structural steel erection for the main seating bowl; and over the next seven months, Red Bull expects to erect the steel to support the dynamic form roof, 60 feet of which will be translucent.

London - A View From Above

Filed under: Art, Cool Ish, London

night-photo-field

So this cat Jason Hawkes is an aerial photographer from London who does an incredible job of capturing things from high above. I can’t imagine dangling outside of a helicopter at night, especially while taking pictures as cool as these. These photos give a different view point of an amazing city. Check out some more of his work after the jump.

Burning Man 2008

Filed under: Cool Ish, Culture, Fire

thats-a-structure.jpg

I had my itunes on shuffle and one of the greatest dj’s to come out of S.F. was throwing his funky electronic musk my way; Bassnectar. And it got me thinking, Burning man is this week. It started on Monday the 25th, but the big burn isn’t until Sept. 1st.

What is Burning Man you say? It all started back in the day on a small beach in San Francisco. Now, 21 years later, over 48,000+ people assemble a mini-city in the Black Rock Desert, NV for one week out of the year to be part of an experimental community, which challenges its members to express themselves and rely on themselves to a degree that is not normally encountered in one’s day-to-day life.

If anyone has taken part in this yearly festival please comment. I’ve got a couple of co-workers out there and am eagerly awaiting their photos and stories.

The Godfather

Filed under: Art, Cool Ish, Legends

the-godfather-print

Pretty much every dude I know is a fan of The Godfather. I can’t even tell you how many times I have watched the trilogy (although I and II are my faves). Anyway, the print above was created using the entire script from the movie.

The highest grossing film of its time, The Godfather is one of the great treasures of cinema. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Marlon Brando and a then unknown Al Pacino in the title roles, the film has been consistently ranked as one of the best films ever made by critics and media. A true pop culture icon, the film has had an immeasurable effect on popular culture ranging from the films of Martin Scorsese to The Sopranos. It is also one of the most quoted films in history which makes it a perfect choice for LA Pop Art. “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse,” still stands as one of the most memorable lines if not THE most memorable line ever spoken in a film.

With the help and partnership of Paramount Studios, we are proud to offer you this Godfather artwork created using the entire script of this cinematic great.

Best thing about this piece of art, the 24″ x 30″ is only $13.99. Prices go up from there, but as far as I’m concerned this is a steal. Head here to see a high res version of the print and/or to place your order.

Tony And Paul’s Latest - Gabe Dixon Band

Filed under: Cool Ish, Joe, Music, Tony Vs. Paul, Videos

Our boys Tony and Paul have done it once again, this time bringing to life the Gabe Dixon Band’s “Til Your Gone”.

Absolutely nuts how they can make people not only turn into the keys of the piano while the song is playing, but actually make the people be the keys that are playing the song.

From killing it with Tony vs Paul to where they stand today with this video, the boys from Boston have a future in the game that won’t be stopped.

Remote Controlled Javelin Retrievers

Filed under: Cool Ish, Olympics, Toys

javelin-car-2

The Olympics are officialy over, so many of you might not want to see any more stories about them. But I had to share this one. Apparently China decided that having human beings retrieve javelins was something that they wanted to get rid of, so instead they had remote controlled cars do the job.

Two kids who look to be in their mid teens sit in chairs with large remote controls driving these cars (that look like something from that Speed Racer movie) back and forth from the field of play where the hammer throw competition is happening. Usually after an athlete throws the hammer someone is there to take it from the official back to the start for the next athlete to throw. Not here, not at these Olympics. Instead the official takes the heavy hammer and places it into the car, which is then driven back to where the kids are sitting. They have two of them so as one is coming back to the start the other is on they way to the end. I’m told the cars are also used to transport the discus and javelin as well.

Stanley Kubrick’s Boxes

Filed under: Art, Cool Ish, Movies, WTF

Director Stanley Kubrick was responsible for a series of jaw dropping films including: Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, 2001, Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, Eyes Wide Shut and more.  As the years went on though, the gaps between his films got longer and longer.  What was Kubrick doing?  Jon Ronson of Channel 4 in England gets a peak at the mountains of research that went into the movies, and inside the thousands of numbered boxes…
