Soccer and Street Art

Filed under: Art, Cool Ish, Culture

As I was searching for some specific artwork online today, I ended up stumbling across some street art / graffiti that all had a soccer theme to it. Some were obvious, some more clever, and a lot are paying homage to heroes such as Pele and Maradona.  Soccers influence on people around the world is unquestionable, and you can see some of the influence in their art. Check out some more images after the jump

The Screaming Eagles and American Outlaws are hosting a couple of get togethers this weekend in DC for the Saturday night game versus Cuba.

Friday Oct 10 - USA Supporters Meet and Greet will be at Momo’s Sports Bar, 5:30 to Closing.

Saturday Oct 11 - Tailgate is at RFK Stadium Lot 8, starting at 3pm until gametime. Lots of food is planned. A key detail is that there will be 10 kegs: including Guinness, Spaten, Sam Adams, plus a couple regional brews Magic Hat from Vermont and Bell’s from Michigan.

PostGame - at Finn macCools.

Definitely go to The Screaming Eagles or The American Outlaws site for more information…this sounds like a blast.

GameDay in Havana!

Filed under: Cuba, Culture, Music, US National Team, World Cup Qualifying

Lots of great stuff at the USMNT blog, including an interesting pre-game Pedro Gomez video and a couple players talking about the unique circumstances of tonight’s game.

Goff gives a good rundown of the scene in Havana.

Grant Wahl talks about the mesmerizing strangeness of the country.

Did you know the admission price for this game is 4 cents?

Will the player’s exchange jerseys after the game? Unlikely, says Maykel Galindo, “If someone wants to exchange jerseys, like in the Gold Cup, you can’t because otherwise you won’t have anything to wear for the next match.”

Finally, what are the Cuba Cinco risking by travelling to Cuba…? On a related note, Miss Cuba is hot.

Live on ESPN Classic and Galavision tonight, 09/06/2008 8:00 PM ET. BVSC is always good!

Burning Man 2008

I had my itunes on shuffle and one of the greatest dj’s to come out of S.F. was throwing his funky electronic musk my way; Bassnectar. And it got me thinking, Burning man is this week. It started on Monday the 25th, but the big burn isn’t until Sept. 1st.

What is Burning Man you say? It all started back in the day on a small beach in San Francisco. Now, 21 years later, over 48,000+ people assemble a mini-city in the Black Rock Desert, NV for one week out of the year to be part of an experimental community, which challenges its members to express themselves and rely on themselves to a degree that is not normally encountered in one’s day-to-day life.

If anyone has taken part in this yearly festival please comment. I’ve got a couple of co-workers out there and am eagerly awaiting their photos and stories.

Road Trip Toronto

Filed under: Culture, FC Uptown, FCD, Friends, Toronto FC

Over the weekend I took a trip north of the border to visit Toronto and meet a couple friends and go to the FC Dallas-Toronto FC game.

After driving about 6 hours (I live in OH these days) I got to Toronto and checked into the Canadiana Hostel and met the crew. Staying at a hostel was a pretty random idea, but the location was great, there were a ton of Euro backbackers looking to grab a brew at one of the hundreds of local pubs, and of course it was dirt cheap. Hey, who needs air conditioning?

The Texas invasion force does not seem to scare the locals…

We walked over to pre-game a bit with the Red Patch Boys. Meeting the Red Patch Boys was very cool - let’s be honest, it can be strange to meet a bunch of Texans rolling up - but the guys could not have been nicer and we had some good laughs here. Notice the boots with shorts look, Yikes!

A Lot More Pics After The Jump…
