DC United star Santino Quaranta retires from pro soccer after 11 MLS seasons

D.C. United and Santino Quaranta announced today the veteran midfielder will retire from professional soccer. Having joined United in 2001, Quaranta’s playing career comes to an end after 11 MLS seasons.

“I have no regrets at all,” said Quaranta. “I have accomplished a lot in the game. That was a huge part of the decision; I felt like I have accomplished enough. In terms of the club and leaving D.C. United, it is a place that is near and dear to my heart, with Kevin [Payne], Dave [Kasper] and Benny [Olsen] – whose friendship I will always cherish – and all of the other coaches and people that I have come across in this club. They have all meant a lot to me, and the club is a place that is always going to be special to me and my family.”

DC United has unveiled what their 2012 uniforms will look like. They have stuck with their traditional black kits for home games and the new white away jersey features a contrasting red collar. Both jerseys feature an embossed District of Columbia flag, paying homage to United’s 16-year history in the Metropolitan Area. Four stars, representing United’s four MLS Cups, remain fixed above the team crest.

Andy Najar to train with Tottenham Hotspur

Widely considered to be D.C. United’s brightest young prospect, Andy Najar, the 2010 MLS Rookie of the Year departs this evening for the English capital, where he will begin training with Tottenham on Monday, November 28. The Honduran will be in London through Saturday, December 10.

Speaking on behalf of United, General Manager Dave Kasper said of Najar’s training stint with Tottenham, “We are pleased to finalize Andy’s stay with Tottenham. I think this experience will be tremendous for him. He will come away from this as a better player, and we look forward to having him back with us shortly.”

DC United keeper Bill Hamid on trial with West Bromwich Albion

West Bromwich Albion have taken DC United goalkeeper Bill Hamid on trial to assess whether he would be worth ‘pursuing’.

Hamid is spending the week training with the Premier League club after impressing during the 2011 Major League Soccer season.

The 21-year-old has also been called up to the USA national team squad this year and Baggies assistant boss Michael Appleton confirmed the club’s interest in the keeper.

“Bill is here for a week so we can have a look at him,” Appleton told the club’s official website.
