The Football Association can confirm that Stuart Pearce will take temporary charge of the England team for the match against Holland on 29 February.

The former England captain will lead the squad for the Wembley international, stepping up from his usual duties as Head Coach of the Under-21 side, while The Football Association looks to appoint a long-term successor to Fabio Capello.

Pearce, capped 78 times, has been involved in the England senior set-up since January 2008, having been appointed Under-21 manager back in February 2007.

Harry Redknapp has insisted he has “not even thought about” becoming the next England manager.

The Tottenham manager, who was cleared of tax evasion charges on Wednesday, is the firm favourite to replace Fabio Capello, who resigned after talks with the Football Association chairman David Bernstein.

Redknapp, speaking to Sky as he left his home near Poole, played down talk of him stepping in to guide the team at Euro 2012.

“I’ve not even thought about it. I’ve got a job to do. I’ve got a big game on Saturday for Tottenham. Tottenham is my focus … They [the FA] will make whatever decision they want to make. Hopefully it’ll be the right decision for the country but my focus is all on Tottenham.”

Although Capello was known to be frustrated by the FA’s move, the Italian’s decision to walk away caught many, including Redknapp, by surprise.

Redknapp said: “I was shocked. I was surprised. I didn’t expect that to happen. We knew he was going to leave in the summer. I didn’t expect it to happen now.”

“Tottenham have been fantastic to me,” Redknapp said. “The fans last week at the Wigan game … it was incredible the reception they gave me. It wouldn’t be right for them, to focus on anything else but Tottenham. That’s my only interest, is Tottenham Hotspur.”

Word around the campfire is that Harry Redknapp, after being cleared of tax evasion charges, is the overwhelming favorite to replace Fabio Capello as England’s next manager after the Italian resigned because of the breakdown in his relationship with the Football Association over the John Terry affair.

Buuuut …. there are a few candidates that at least make the conversation a little bit interesting. Here are the ‘front-runners’ to land the job. They have either been rumored/linked to a potential opening in the past, have exemplary club records, or a boatload of international experience. So, in true TOW fashion.. who ya got??

The Football Association can confirm that Fabio Capello has today resigned as England Manager.

This follows a meeting involving FA Chairman David Bernstein, FA General Secretary Alex Horne and Fabio Capello at Wembley Stadium.

The discussions focused on The FA Board’s decision to remove the England team captaincy from John Terry, and Fabio Capello’s response through an Italian broadcast interview.

In a meeting for over an hour, Fabio’s resignation was accepted and he will leave the post of England Manager with immediate effect.

David Bernstein said: “I would like to stress that during today’s meeting and throughout his time as England Manager, Fabio has conducted himself in an extremely professional manner. We have accepted Fabio’s resignation, agreeing this is the right decision. We would like to thank Fabio for his work with the England team and wish him every success in the future.”

A media conference with David Bernstein and the Club England Management team will take place at Wembley on Thursday at 12 noon.

The FA will not be making any further comment until the media conference.
