Portsmouth Charged Over Benjani Moves
Filed under: FA Cup, PortsmouthThe English Football Association have charged Premiership side and FA Cup holders Portsmouth FC with “breach of rules” regarding the acquisition of Zimbabwean Benjani from Auxerre in January 2006 and the subsequent sale of Benjani to Manchester City in January 2008.
Agent Willie McKay had also been charged with “breach of rules” after representing the selling clubs in both moves as the FA rules against an agent representing two different clubs while dealing the same player.
Portsmouth released a statement saying, “We did not pay an agent when Benjani joined from Auxerre, and his transfer to Manchester City was approved at the time by the Premier League and the FA’s compliance unit,” it said.
“This is nothing more than a technicality which we will strongly contest.”
Benjani himself is not being charged with anything regarding the moves.

Mark Hughes - My Take
Filed under: FA Cup, Manchester City, Manchester United, Mark HughesI have been a Manchester United fan since I was about 12 years old. Back then, watching games from Europe was not in the cards, so the few minutes I would get to see every week of my beloved Red Devils was special. Back then there was an hour long recap of the English First Division (this was even before the EPL) that came on Prime Ticket or some obscure Fox network. I would videotape every episode and watch them over and over trying to emulate what my idols were doing.

Portsmouth past Man Utd in FA Cup
Filed under: FA Cup, Manchester United, PortsmouthWhile there will be shouts for an early penalty with Sylvain Distin’s bump on Cristiano Ronaldo, the chances that Manchester United squandered ultimately cost them the game. One v one’s, shots off the post and Michael Carrick’s inability to usher the ball over the line after beating David James proved that it’s not always the best team that wins.
All credit to Harry Redknapp’s Portsmouth as they did a great job of closing out the match with team defensive focus and capitalizing on opportunities.
