“A professional soccer stadium could be coming to Somerville to jumpstart commercial development in a long-underutilized business district. Last week city officials announced a study, funded by Herb Chambers and the Kraft Group, “designed to help the City promote economic development in both neighborhoods” of Inner Belt and Brickbottom according to the June 23 release….”

One less FieldTurf stadium…? One can only hope.

Adidas Beijing Olympics Ball

Here’s the official Adidas Teamgeist II soccer ball for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Looks very cool to me. Nicknamed “The Great Wall Star”, the gold Chinese characters on the red ball read ”Zhong Guo” which means “China.” The characters were painted by Nian Weisi, a former president of the Football Association of China.

Speaking of the Olympics, Ralph Lauren is hooking up the US athletes. The WSJ discusses “The Shoe Olympics”. Nike is also supplying the US track and field team uniforms. Of course, Speedo has been in the news for their new suits they’ve designed for the incredibly hot Amanda Beard the US team.

Yea or Nay?

PUMA, ATMOS NYC and Mitsuaki Iwago have teamed up to bring you the PUMA x Atmos Endangered Species Collection, which includes six shoes featuring endangered animals. The collection is broken down into two different releases, the Polar Pack and the Asia Pack; both include three shoes inspired by the photography of highly-acclaimed National Geographic photographer, Mitsuaki Iwago.

Each shoe captures the unique characteristics of a specific animal and has a high quality image of Mr. Iwago’s prized photography printed on the removable insole. The name and habitat of each animal is on the reverse tongue and the outsole in both English and Japanese. The shoes were created in hopes of bringing attention to our impact on these endangered animals.

I happen to be in Houston visiting old buds, watching beautiful tennis and having some cold ones by the pool when I opened the paper today and saw that half the known soccer universe is coming to town for a free payday soccer exibition tomorrow. Although doubtful, it is rumored officials from the Galaxy will meet with Ronaldinho at Reliant Stadium and make an offer.
