I was 20 years old and in Malaysia at the U-20 World Youth Championships with the United States and rooming with Brian West the first time I read The Shining… I had already seen the movie when I was 6 or 7 (and still didn’t understand why Jack was trying to kill Olive Oyl), but the book… The book got at me for a few nights afterwards and I’ve never taken kindly to a shower curtain completely pulled since.
