Beans, Ace, I.S.P.S and myself are making our way to the NYC tonight (red eye-ing it) for tomorrow’s 1st Annual Grassroots Soccer United.

The game itself will be played at the Lions Gate Field in Sara D. Roosevelt park (corner of Christie and Grand) in downtown Manhattan tomorrow October 2nd at noon with Hollywood United facing off against Ethan Zohn’s celebrity team in a charity match for the Grassroots Soccer Organization.

Last night marked the final game at Yankee Stadium. Many world class athletes played in The House That Ruth Built, including Pele. Pele first visited the stadium in 1966 as part of Santos (Brazil) vs Inter Milan in an international friendly. Later, Pele joined the NY Cosmos. In the picture above, Pele scores against the Washington Diplomats in the first round of the NASL playoffs, 1976. Yankee Stadium was home to the New York Cosmos in 1971 and 1976.

Before the Meadowlands was constructed, Yankee Stadium was always the preferred destination for barnstorming sides from Europe.

UPDATE - If any of you out there are planning to hit up this great event, let us here at The Original Winger know as I am playing in the afternoon Charity game and the entire Los Angeles based TOW crew (myself, Beans, Athe and I.S.P.S. with Joe heading down from Beantown) are heading to the NYC to be apart of this great Thursday night event at the Marquee and will be meeting up with the Designated Player crew of Ives (Soccer By Ives), Shawn (The Offside Rules) and Adam (This Is American Soccer). Sadly, I don’t think Bruce (DuNord) will be able to join us as all the rest of the crew is in the NYC locale, but hopefully he can.

On Friday we’ll be heading up to Boston (for the Real Salt Lake at New England Revolution game) and the TOW crew will definitely be hitting up Beantown both Friday and Saturday night, so if you’re going to be around and want to get down with us, let us know!

A very cool event by host Ethan Zohn, who’s use of our game is and has been constantly raising money for the education of AIDS awareness to children in Africa that many celebrities, athletes and everyday people are getting behind, taking place on October 2nd in New York City.

The New York Mets are looking into purchasing a Major League Soccer club after completing construction of Citi Field, the new $600 million home the baseball team will move into for the 2009 season, said David Howard, the club’s executive vice president for business.

Howard said an MLS team likely would play in a different venue that would give the team a chance to host other events as well. “We’re not resting,” Howard said in an interview with Bloomberg Radio’s On the Ball program, airing Sept. 13. “Before even Citi Field is completed, we’re looking to see what might be next for us. There’s a lot of opportunity and potential”

Beans, Ace and I just sat down for the start of tonights Barcelona @ NY Red Bulls friendly at Giants Stadium.

So far the MLS boys are holding strong defensively, but like most of the matches that see high profile Euro teams coming over this way, NY is having trouble keeping possession going forward.

When your teams leading scorer is you Left-Back (van den Bergh with 5 Goals) and you’ve just lost the 2nd best talent on the team in the form of Jozy Altidore, you might want to start tapping into the International market instead of looking for D-mids and Defenders.

And doesn’t Rojas remind anyone else of The Bruce?

This past weekend New York hosted the adidas Fanatic VII. A few weeks ago was LA’s version which was won by The Syrup Kidz. These cats not only won the LA event, but they won last years competition in NY and won it again this year. Dunny and I saw them play out here in LA and they had some game for sure. We got a Bumpy Pitch team in the works that hopefully will challenge The Syrup Kidz next year. Check out some pictures after the jump.

It wasn’t just the 90+ degree temperature in the NYC area that was making things hot this weekend, clearly it was Becks who was in town with the LA Galaxy. For the Red Bulls, it meant attendance over 40,000 and for the local gals, high hopes to get a glimpse of Becks shirtless!

With Giants Stadium, the Red Bulls home turf (but not for long!), being a stone’s throw from my Weehawken, NJ apartment, I couldn’t help but brave the sweltering heat for a glimpse. And, truthfully, as a soccer fan, I knew it’d be a great match and there was a part of me that wanted to see the home team take the victory against the Galaxy again this year!

Even though Becks was on the field, the hometown team received the lion share of support. And, that’s what you gotta love about New Yorkers - - always cheering for their home team! Not to be forgotten, Landon Donovan was also in town, arguably one of the best player’s in the league drawing many of his own fans to the game as there was no shortage of kids and adults donning the Donovan jersey! And, hey, he lived up to his own hype by knocking one into the back of the net in the 92nd minute saving the Galaxy from a loss, the game ending in a 2-2 draw.

So, look, yeah, I’m a chick and Becks is easy on the eyes, but more than thanking his parents for their incredible gift to women (and some men!), if you’re a MLS fan, you’ve gotta thank MLS for this move and thank him kicking the sport up a notch in the U.S. As they would say across the pond, “Cheers mate…”
