Messi Showing Off His Gold

Filed under: Argentina, Barcelona, Leonel Messi, Olympics, Videos

Don’t you just love how Messi’s casually swinging around his 2008 Olympic Gold Medal as he’s showing it off to the Spanish Press like it’s some old key ring.

Guess after all the drama that was surrounding Messi’s departure for the games, no one is going to hold it against him now that he’s got the Gold in his pocket.

Remote Controlled Javelin Retrievers

Filed under: Cool Ish, Olympics, Toys

javelin-car-2

The Olympics are officialy over, so many of you might not want to see any more stories about them. But I had to share this one. Apparently China decided that having human beings retrieve javelins was something that they wanted to get rid of, so instead they had remote controlled cars do the job.

Two kids who look to be in their mid teens sit in chairs with large remote controls driving these cars (that look like something from that Speed Racer movie) back and forth from the field of play where the hammer throw competition is happening. Usually after an athlete throws the hammer someone is there to take it from the official back to the start for the next athlete to throw. Not here, not at these Olympics. Instead the official takes the heavy hammer and places it into the car, which is then driven back to where the kids are sitting. They have two of them so as one is coming back to the start the other is on they way to the end. I’m told the cars are also used to transport the discus and javelin as well.

Seriously?

Matos shoved the referee and kicked him in the head in a furious reaction to be disqualified.  The Cuban took gold in the 2000 Olympics, but he did not take kindly to being disqualified halfway through the bout for taking too long to return to action after an injury.

Matos was leading 3-2, when he fell to the mat after being hit by his opponent. Fighters have a maximum of one minute’s break for injury, and the referee removed him from the competition as soon as the time elapsed.

Matos pushed and kicked the referee, drawing blood from the mouth, then attacked the Swedish judge before spitting on the floor and being escorted out of the arena.

Both Matos and his coach Leudis Gonzalez have been swiftly handed a lifetime ban from all World Taekwondo Federation championships, subject to confirmation by the International Olympic Committee.

Olympic Final: Argentina v Nigeria

We’re at halftime right now (1am Eastern) in Argentina v Nigeria 0-0.  Marcello Balboa is saying Nigeria is playing better, but I disagree and see Argentina building many more chances.  I don’t like the cynical play on Messi, and the overall defensive play of Nigeria.  Nigeria’s chances have looked weak.  It’s hot, it’s humid, Argentina is a little flat sure, and it’s sloppy.  But I see Argentina pulling this out 2-0.

Becks On Beijing

While I’ll never understand why MLS schedules a Thursday night match the day after World Cup Qualifiers and International Friendlies, having David Beckham in Beijing as part of the torch passing to London will have another amazing effect on Major League Soccer.

It’s pretty crazy that this kid can not only build this, but have the patience to stay with it…  Anyone else think about blowing at it over when you watched the video?

When No One Thought They Could

Over coming massive injuries that cost them the likes of our girl Leslie Osborne, Cat Whitehill and Abby Wambach just weeks and sometimes day before they left for Beijing AND putting their heads down and getting on with it after losing their opening match…

This United States Women’s team deserves more than a Gold Medal today because they stuck together as a team.  A team that was sometimes over matched and sometimes out played.  A team that when facing adversity, they stood as not just the 11 on the field, but as a team with the support of the player’s on the bench, medical staff, coordination staff and most importantly the coaching staff who made great decisions throughout the tournament.

Don’t be surprised if that Post-Olympic Tour adds a few more dates in the next couple of days.

Argentina v Brazil: Did you see the second goal?

throw_out_tv.jpg

If you watched yesterday’s semifinal on tv, you missed the second goal by Argentina. Why? Because there was a mid-game break for commercials. Shocking this kind of thing still happens. I understand a network needs to make money, but it isn’t the mid-80s anymore. Fans deserve better. Unacceptable.
