Argentina v Brazil: Did you see the second goal?

If you watched yesterday’s semifinal on tv, you missed the second goal by Argentina. Why? Because there was a mid-game break for commercials. Shocking this kind of thing still happens. I understand a network needs to make money, but it isn’t the mid-80s anymore. Fans deserve better. Unacceptable.

Italian Fencers Upset As Footballers Fly First Class

italianfencing.jpg

Italy’s successful winning women’s fencing team were angered at the weekend when they flew back from Beijing in economy while the nation’s under-achieving Olympic football players were stretching out in first class. Valentina Vezzali won Gold in the individual foil at the Games with Margherita Granbassi taking Bronze before Italy finished third in the team foil event.

The soccer side surprisingly lost to Belgium in the quarter-finals.

One of the fencers raged: “How can this be? We won a Gold and two Bronze and they treat us like this, while they [the footballers] didn’t win anything but they are in business class.”

Don’t fool with an Italian with a sword…

Argentina v Brazi

It will be Messi Vs Ronaldinho as Argentina tango’s with Brazil in the Semi-Final’s of the Men’s Olympic Soccer in Beijing at 9am Eastern Time.

With both players scoring twice in the earlier rounds of the competition, Brazil leads the tournament with a team high 11 goals scored while not conceding any, while Argentina has conceded just two.

Surprising side Belgium will take on the Super Eagles from Nigeria in the other Semi-Final from Shanghai after Belgium snuck by the Italians 3-2 (and playing a man down for most of the match) and Nigeria downed Ivory Coast 2-nil.

1996 was Nigeria, 2000 was Cameroon, 2004 was Argentina and 2008 will be….

Olympic Set

Richard Sandomir from the New York Times has a great insider look at the amount of events being called from 30 Rockefeller Plaza and the temporarily vacant set stage of Saturday Night Live.

So if you just thought it was Marcelo Balboa and Brandi Chastain calling games from here in the United States because it was SOCCER, throw in archery, badminton, baseball, equestrian, fencing, field hockey, handball, shooting, softball, table-tennis, tennis and weight lifting as the other, other sports in Beijing.

US Women’s Results

The US Women’s Olympic Team came through against New Zealand and had the Japan v Norway match go their way as well to not only advance but to win the group. In order for the US team to have won their group, they needed to not only beat New Zealand, have Japan beat undefeated Norway, but also to make up a goal differential that saw them at -1 while Norway was at +3. The ladies did their part by getting past New Zealand 4-0, and Japan surpised everyone by dismantling Norway 5-1. By winning their group, it means that the US doesnt have to play Brasil in the quarter finals or Germany in the semis. Instead they face Canada next and most likely China in the semis. How much fun would playing China in the semi finals be! Tough for sure, but memorable. Congrats ladies. On to the quarters…

Adidas “Impossible is Nothing” Olympic Print Ads

In February, six adidas athletes headed to Beijing to get some training in and get a little bit more familiar with the city. This also was the perfect time for 180 Amsterdam to get some incredible images that make up their “Impossible is Nothing, Gold is Not a Given” print campaign. I’m a fan of the work adidas and 180 Amsterdam  do, and this is further evidence of why. Check out some more images after the jump.
