Old Firm to Celtic

The 2-1 win takes Celtic to 74 points, 1 behind league leaders Rangers (who have two games in hand). The two meet up again at Parkhead (Celtic) on April 27th in an Old Firm match that could determine the title.

I can tell you firsthand that this is one of the greatest rivalries played in the world. If you ever have the opportunity to witness one of these matches, you’ll never regret it.

I was lucky enough to spend three months at Rangers when Richard Gough, Alley McCoist and Paul Gascoigne were there and was fortunate enough to see two Old Firm matches at Ibrox and one away at Parkhead and they left me speechless.

Violence, hatred and love are all seen in those 90 minutes.

Scottish Humor

Scotland flag

My boy Robbie is a DJ from Glasgow, is a super proud Scot, a fiercely loyal Rangers follower and has a wicked sense of humor. Robbie is always telling me jokes or forwarding funny shit, and it always makes me smile. Being that today is Monday, I figured I would post a joke Robbie just sent me. Thanks for this one Robbi..

An elderly Scotsman lay dying in his bed.

While suffering the agonies of impending death, he suddenly smelled
the aroma of his favourite biscuits wafting up the stairs. He
gathered
his remaining strength, and lifted himself from the bed.

Leaning on the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom, and
with even greater effort, gripping the railing with both hands,
he crawled
downstairs.

With laboured breath, he leaned against the door-frame, gazing
into the
kitchen.

Were it not for death’s agony, he would have thought himself
already in
heaven, for there, spread out upon waxed paper on the kitchen table
were literally hundreds of his favourite biscuits, freshly baked.

Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of love from his devoted
Scottish wife of sixty years, seeing to it that he left this world
a happy
man?

Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself towards the
table, kneeling on his knees in crumpled posture. His aged and
withered hand
trembled towards a biscuit at the edge of the table, when it was
suddenly smacked by his wife with a spatula………….

“F* off” she said, “they’re for the funeral

Andy Webster, the new face of the Bosman Transfer Ruling?

image via TeamTalk

12 years ago a man named Jean-Marc Bosman forever changed the game of football, transforming a once highly controlled club sport into a multi-billion dollar industry and allowing player movement all over the world. Now a Scottish International named Andy Webster could be the next Bosman, having invoked a loophole in Article 17 of the adopted FIFA EU law in late 2006 which states any player under the age of 25 MAY cancel his contract AFTER 3 years IF the player were to sign with another team in a foreign country. After a disagreement over contract negotiations led to Webster being dropped from the squad at Hearts in the Scottish Premier League, Russian owner Vladimir Romanov was livid and went to the press suggesting he would be sold. Webster in turn invoked Article 17, notifying Hearts that he had signed on with Wigan, only to head to Glasgow Rangers on loan less than a year later. Today the Court of Arbitration Sport ruled that Hearts are to be rewarded with 150,000 pound as compensation to be paid by Webster, but that the loophole clause and transfer stand as legal, which means that now clubs could essentially find a cheaper way around transfer fees and make buying out contracts easier/cheaper for the players to pay. Stay tuned to see who invokes this clause next and what ramifications this decision could have down the line for MLS.

UPDATE - The more I thought about this last night, the more possibilities sprinkled about.  This ruling forces the players current club to make sure that a new contract is hashed out before the 3rd year time line comes to an end.  As of yesterday, clubs usually left new contract negotiations until the last 6 months to a year because there was no other reason not to wait, but now it almost forces the clubs hand to make sure they protect themselves from having the under 25 player from invoke Article 17.  Here’s an example - Imagine if Michael Essien had spent 3 years at Lyon (Chelsea ended up purchasing Essien for 26 Million Pound).  If Chelsea were to have contact with Essien’s representatives, telling them to have Essien invoke Article 17 and pay the compensation fee back to Lyon himself, Chelsea would have saved 26 Million Pound and undoubtedly would have given Essien a much higher pay wage knowing he had saved them that much money.

It might have happened back in August, but Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has received a 4 match ban for going into the stands at Aberdeen.  The fiery former midfielder got into an altercation (told the steward to f*ck off and a might have given a little shove to boot) and was found guilty of “Unacceptable Conduct” by the Scottish Football Association.

Rangers, Liverpool, Galatasary, Southampton, Torino, Benfica, Blackburn and Newcastle are the clubs he’s been in charge of so far and if he has his choice, Scotland would be the next for Graeme Souness. After interviewing for the job last week, he’s been very vocal about declaring his want for the job.

Alan Hutton Shuns Spurs

Filed under: EPL, Scotland, Transfer News

Alan Hutton

DaMarcus Beasley’s teammate Alan Hutton has made a major decision regarding his future today, turning down a move to White Hart Lane in favor of staying at Ibrox.  The Rangers and Scotland right back who impressed in his Champions League and Euro Qualifying matches has been praised continuously in the last two season with Sir Alex commenting that “he looks to be a superstar”.

Look for Hutton to stay until the summer and then make his move to a top four club.
