The Swiss, who top European Group Two with 20 points from nine games, need a point at home to Israel on Wednesday to win the group and make sure of their place in South Africa. They could qualify later on Saturday if Greece and Latvia draw.

Alexander Frei Ruptures Knee Ligaments? - Confirmed

UPDATE - It’s been confirmed that Alexander Frei has a partial tear in his internal left knee ligaments.

Very bad news for Borussia Dortmund.

Alexander Frei

Switzerland’s all time leading goalscorer (35 goals in 59 appearances) and inspirational leader Alexander Frei left in the 45th minute of todays 2008 Euro opening match against the Czech Republic and it’s feared that he’s ruptured his knee ligaments.

While the challenge from Grygera on Frei didn’t look like it would injure the striker, knee ligament injuries are some of the more wackier injuries that players deal with as you can never truly predict when, where or why they happen.

But as you can tell, it hurt bad enough to make Frei drop some tears. And due to the size and nature (home field advantage) of the tournament, it’s understandable.

Imagine what the Swiss would have been like WITHOUT Hakan Yakin!
