Paul Caligiuri v Trinidad and Tobago

Filed under: Trinidad & Tobago, US National Team

With the US National team playing down in Trinidad tonight, I couldn’t help but bring up this goal. Without doubt our boy Paul’s goal changed soccer in the United States. Without this goal the US doesn’t qualify for Italia 90, which means the US doesn’t host the World Cup, which was a huge catalyst for getting MLS off the ground. So this goal is a monumental goal.

Crazy that 19 years after this goal, the US is back in T&T, having already qualified for the Hexagonal allowing the next generation of US players the opportunity to get some experience. The sport has come a long way here in the US, both on and off the field and what kind of growth lies ahead is exciting. We still have a long way to go in a lot of areas with the sport, but every once in a while I think it’s important to sit back and applaud how far the sport has come here.
