As I’ve mentioned before, we are big fans of Steve Nash around here. And most of you who read this site are hip to his Showdown in Chinatown that he has been putting on in NYC.  Well this weekend he is back in Vancouver putting on Showdown in Downtown. Here’s a little info about the event from the Steve Nash site:

Join us on Saturday, September 19th, for a one-of-a-kind sports spectacle!  Come be a part of the excitement as soccer stars and basketball royalty compete for bragging rights in an eight-a-side soccer match; featuring two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash and his NBA friends, local soccer favorites from the Vancouver Whitecaps, and the Whitecaps Residency Program athletes, and special guests, the Showdown will amaze and delight adults and kids alike!

Organizers of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver are taking the mellow approach to suggestions that their planned Olympic torch looks like a marijuana cigarette.

“We’re not worried about it at all,” Dave Cobb, the executive vice-president of the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC) told reporters on Wednesday, in response to a newspaper article that dubbed the torch “The Olympic Toke.” (more…)

Vancouver Sells Out First Set Of Season Ticket Deposits

Just a week after MLS’ announcement that Vancouver would be one of the two cities receiving a 2011 Expansion Team, the supporters stepped up and did their part purchasing all of the deposits for the 5,000 tickets available.

Steve Nash is happy and excited about the Whitecaps 2011

Steve Nash’s love for soccer has been well documented, so much so that he even once mentioning how he had visions of owning Tottenham Hotspur. Well his ownership jones has been satisfied recently after the MLS approved his four man ownership group for the expansion franchise in Vancouver that will begin play in his home province of British Columbia in 2011. from ESPN.com:

“I’ll take it,” Nash said with glee over the phone, acknowledging that it’s the first lift in terms of sports he’s felt in ages, as the prospect of missing the playoffs for the first time since the 1999-2000 season with Dallas is growing more likely by the day for the 35-year-old.

Steve Nash signs with IMG

With Miami out of the MLS expansion race, Vancouver moves to the front according to those in the know. Yesterday, Vancouver investor and NBA star, Steve Nash, signed up with the powerful marketing group IMG to help with marketing efforts specifically in Canada and outside the US.

Is a plan by Steve Nash for a big marketing push in Canada a possible first sign that a team could be coming to Vancouver?
