Manchester United discovered what it is like to lose a European Cup final as brilliant Barcelona ruled Rome on Wednesday, securing a comfortable 2-0 win.

If there is any consolation in failure to become the first side to retain the trophy in the Champions League era, it is that they lost to a side as fluent and brilliant to watch as they are.

Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi scored the goals either side of half-time but to single those two out for special praise would be unfair on their team-mates, and particularly Xavi, who was simply awesome.

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has been handed a one match ban (home against Aston Villa on April 5th) and escaped a longer one after Referee Phil Dowd did not write up the England International for abuse or dropping the corner flag on his way to the locker room.

Give the kid his due, he got Rooney flat footed, pulled it between his legs and hit a laser far post.  If it was a Premiership match, you know he would have ended up in a heap after being scissored form behind.

Manchester United picked up another 3 points on Wednesday night, pushing them into 2nd place and just 2 points behind league leaders Liverpool but might have lost Wayne Rooney for up to three weeks after the England International limped off in the closing minutes.
