Video :: Nike Presents: 12 Miles North – Find Your Surfing

Filed under: Culture & Lifestyle, Los Angeles, Nike, Videos

Before racial segregation was ruled unconstitutional, there was a 200’ stretch of beach where Pico Blvd meets the sea – behind where Shutters and Casa Del Mar stand today known as The INKWELL – the only place on the West side of Los Angeles where people of color could congregate. There was also a Santa Monica High School student by the name of Nick Gabaldon who frequented the beach and eventually walked up to a lifeguard and asked if he could borrow his board to paddle into the surf.

Soon Nick got to be pretty good but wanted to test his mettle against the best up in Malibu. So, one day, when the surf got big, he decided to paddle the 12 miles north and enter the lineup. When he got there, the other surfers being viewed as outcasts themselves, welcomed him in with open arms.  In fact, his surfing stood out amongst the crowd and in the 1940’s, Nick became friends with local legends like Ricky Grigg, Matt Kivlin, Mickey Munoz, Bob Simmons and Buzzy Trent. But at the end of each surf session, Nick would have to paddle the 12 miles to exit the beach at The INKWELL.

An epic swell was due to hit the shores of Southern California in early June of 1951 and Nick wanted to be in the lineup.  On June 6th, he got there just as the surf picked up.  Since Nick was fearless, he took off on the first wave, some say as big as ten feet, shot the pier but hit a piling. They found his body three days later.  Nick, at the innocent age of 24 was dead.

This is the story of Nick Gabaldon, the first documented African American Surfer.

Nick’s undying passion is an inspiration to anyone who has ever had the courage to dream. With a mix of photos, video, interviews, performances, art and music his story will be told in this documentary. 12 MILES NORTH represents the literal paddle Nick took to fulfill his surf passion and the distant sight of our dreams we all want to pursue.

Cat Invades Pitch at Anfield

Filed under: EPL News, Highlights, Videos, and Scores | English Premier League Highlights, Liverpool, Tottenham

There was a lot of anticipation around today’s match between Liverpool and Tottenham. Spurs have been making a heavy push to seriously challenge for the Premier League title, and Liverpool making a push for that 4th place Champions League place. But the most interesting thing that happened in the first half was a little cat invading the pitch. Luckily for the Anfield staff the cat was caught pretty easily and quickly without having to chase it around the entire pitch.

The cat even has its own Twitter account now. And midway through the second half of this game, the cat already has over 6000 followers. Seriously…

Check out the cat on the pitch at Anfield after the jump.

A statement released by the attorney general’s office read: “Between 3-5 February, Twitter exchanges on Joey Barton’s page which related to the forthcoming trial of John Terry were brought to the attention of the attorney general’s office.

“They have been considered in relation to any possible contempt of court they could create. In this instance the attorney has decided no action is necessary.”

A spokesman for the attorney general’s office said: “Although in this instance no action will be taken, we would like to remind those who publish material that proceedings for the John Terry trial are active. Daniele De Rossi Re-Ups w/ Roma On Five Year Deal / €10 Million A Year Salary

Filed under: Italy, Money, Roma, Soccer News

via ASRoma

“We have reached an agreement with Daniele De Rossi on a new five-year contract starting from 1 July 2012, with an annual salary of €10 million, so €5.5 million net, and a series of bonuses related to appearances and the team’s results. There is no release clause in the contract, which contains an agreement that the club will receive 50% of the player’s image rights. Roma’s aim is obviously first of all to be competitive and then to win things. The fact that Daniele has signed with us is testimony to the ambitions of this club. He had lots of offers from big clubs and also from “exotic” clubs, who laid huge deals on the table for him. If he has signed with us, it means that De Rossi has chosen the shirt he loves but also that he believes firmly in this project and he wants to try and win things here with us.”

“The fact that there are two players like myself and Totti who have tied themselves to a city like Rome and a team like Roma is down to the fans of this team and the marvel of this city. As well as that, Francesco and I are fortunate because there has always been a positive atmosphere within the club, today like throughout the first nine years of my career. It’s been more a family than a club: first with the Sensi family and now this American family, which is very different to the previous ownership, but as I said both of them have offered a serene environment. It would be hypocritical to say that I had never thought about anything else: I know what it means to stay at Roma and not take up other professional opportunities. Totti’s example influenced me in that sense: the image of him as a happy and honest man here in Rome. It made me realize that you can be happy here. I’ll never be able to beat his records, that’s impossible, but my aim is to follow the path he has taken, staying at Roma until his age and still being decisive for the team and loved by the fans – that’s what I want to achieve. Beyond that I also have a strong desire to win some more medals. You can be great at Roma without winning championships or other trophies but I really want to win things here wearing these colours.”

Filed under: Arsenal, EPL News, Highlights, Videos, and Scores | English Premier League Highlights, Injuries, Soccer News

via Wolves

It has been confirmed that Emmanuel Frimpong has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in Saturday’s Barclays Premier League game at QPR.

Frimpong, on loan at Molineux until the end of the season, will now see specialists in London over the next few days before having surgery and starting a programme of rehabilitation.

The midfielder, who suffered the same injury to his left knee in 2010, had made an impressive start to his temporary spell at Wolves, catching the eye during his five appearances in gold and black.

Frimpong is expected to be out for a number of months and will therefore miss the remainder of this season.

Everyone at Wolves would like to thank the midfielder for his efforts whilst at the club and join Arsenal in wishing him a swift recovery.
